REPORT OF THE YOUTH PARTICIPATION SESSION OF THE NATIONAL PEER SUPPORT FORUM - JANUARY 2002

(SAMANTHA LITTLEMORE)

Introduction and rationale:

This report was commissioned in order to provide feedback based upon information gathered from young people during The National Peer Support Forum meeting. Various genres of data have been collated. These include:
Charts and presentations designed by the young people during activities;
Audio recordings of group feedback sessions; and,
Keynotes of the young people who presented their views during the plenary.

The workshop aimed to:

  • Elicit views on what resources/support the young people would like from the Forum;
  • Explore how young people could participate in the Forum;
  • Report on what student's views on principles of good practice of peer support schemes - mentoring, listening, education and mediation.

The meeting incorporated a workshop. This was designed to allow pupils from each participating school the opportunity to share their experiences as supporters and to provide a wider perspective of the issues involved in developing a peer support scheme. In turn, the activities helped to generate ideas focused on the role The Peer Support Forum (PSF) could play in providing some of these needs.
