Peer Support in Action

‘FRIDAY CLUB’

young girl singing in front of friendsTargeting first, second, and third year secondary school pupils who have missed school through bullying (whether as bully or bullied), the Friday club aims to provide support.

Meeting once a week, the club supports children so that they can remain at school, facilitating the growth of a peer support group that enables children to support themselves. The club also aims to be a safe space for the children to discuss and develop confidence and problem-solving skills, and make choices, all through the media of role play, drama and art.

Beginning with ‘sharing time’, the Friday club members discuss the previous week, rating it on a scale of one to ten. The children encourage and support each other in sharing their feelings. Collectively, the Friday club members then choose areas that they would like to work with. Themes discussed by the group can include such things as problem solving, self-assessment, anger, responsibility, and boundaries.

Individuals have reported how helpful an experience it is and how differently they feel after belonging to the Friday club. To get an idea of how beneficial such a club can be, here is a little feedback by some Friday club members:

“By going to the club, my confidence in myself and others has been reborn.”

“We also have a great laugh... I think laughing is very important”

“Before I came to the club I always acted hard – tried to keep my feelings in. But since I went to the club I’ve started to show my true feelings/person.”
