Thursday 5th February saw the national launches of the CHIPS program in England, Scotland and Wales. There was a great deal of press and media interest The Times Educational Supplement and The Times both carried articles on CHIPS as well as many regional papers, radio and TV. ChildLine staff and CHIPS schools were kept busy most of the day giving interviews.
ChildLine In Partnership with Schools was set up as a pilot two years ago and had its national launch in England, Scotland and Wales on Thursday 5th February, 1998. Esther Rantzen, ChildLine Chairman and the Rt. Hon. David Blunkett MP, the Secretary of State for Eduction and Employment, launched CHIPS, in England, at Southgate School in London. Pupils from many schools involved with the CHIPS program attended the launch.
Two schools gave presentations at the launch. Young people from Bedlington County High School talked about how they had helped each other, and others, from Southgate School gave a presentation on how it feels to be bullied. Although the day was short and the travelling long, many schools benefited from seeing what others had done, and by borrowing other schools fundraising ideas.
Childline hopes that the CHIPS program will raise awareness of the help available to young people with problems or concerns not only of ChildLines free telephone counselling service on 0800 1111, but also of the help that pupils can offer each other in school.
